These days, anything you hang on your wall and love can be wall art. Art on your walls can include some wide-ranging objects. Artists define Modern art as art done in a specific time period, and following a similar philosophy. The problem is that the many individuals that make up the art world can't quite agree on exactly what that time period that is, or what exactly that philosophy is. Most agree it began somewhere in the latter half of the 1800's and ran up to about the 1960's to early 70's when artists began declaring themselves post-modern. But as for a simple definition, no one quite agrees, except that modern art should express the ideals and beliefs of the modern, post enlightenment man. A simple survey of the extremely different styles that are included will make you wonder what they could possibly have in common. Perhaps the impressionist Manet was the first of the modern artists. Certainly some argue he was, and that modern art started with Impressionism. However it went on to include Romanticism, Abstract, Realism, Cubism, Post Minimalism, and maybe Pop Art, just to name a few of dozens. Andy Warhol (whose name is virtually synonymous with Pop Art) is the more or less accepted dividing line between Modern art, and what is now referred to as Contemporary art. The problem is that about as many critics and aficionados say that Warhol is the last of the Moderns as say that he is the first of the Contemporary artists.

Average people don't make quite the fuss over the exact delineations between the separate styles, and use both modern and contemporary to mean anything not terribly old.
