This Night Lights Of The USA canvas print is actually taken from a gestalt of several hundred night time satellite images, created with data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). The most illuminated areas represent the largest urban concentrations on the continent, growing as they do with long-established transport connections along major rail and road networks and along the coastline. Even were we to remove the basic shape of the map beneath this composite image, it would therefore be possible for one to identify the outline of the country itself, with clear areas of barely inhabiteddesert discernable around Nevada and Arizona and the swamp and forest land of the South barely lit at all.
