The Tower of London, or Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, to give it its full and proper name, is one of the oldest structures in London, dating back to the Norman Conquest in the late eleventh century. William The Conqueror had the White Tower for which the fortress is named constructed in 1078, only a dozen years after his invasion, and for years the edifice was a potent symbol of Anglo-saxon and Norman tensions. The fortress has since become more famous as a prison than anything else over the centuries since then, hence the phrase "send them to the Tower" - its most famous denizen having been Elizabeth I in the quarrelling shortly before her accession to the throne.
