The Colloseum is considered the greatest marvel of Roman architecture and engineering still in existence. Construction of this gargantuan elliptical amphitheatre was completed in 80 AD under the Emperor Titus and was used to display not only gladiatorial combat but also fantastic spectacles such as dramatisations of great sea battles and re-enactments of infamous skirmishes, as well as executions, trials and the like. The ancient stadium would regularly hold 50,000 spectators during this period, but fell out of use as the ancient world's most famous entertainment venue in the early medieval period. Earthquakes have damaged portions of the Colloseum's mighty structure, but it still exists as a monument to human achievement, something beautifully represented in our Colloseum Rome Canvas print, showing a modern day Colloseum, damaged but dramatically lit up against the night sky as modern cars blur in motion in the streets around it, contrasting the ancient permanence of this magnificent building with the seeming transience of our modern society.
