How did visible masses of liquid droplets or frozen crystals suspended in the atmosphere come to form the root of so much imagery and metaphor across the entire of human culture - from religious and spiritual musings to art, poetry, children's stories, films and theatre?

It's because clouds provide shape to the heavens, allowing for a myriad of interpretations of the realm above all of our heads. Constantly moving, changing, evolving, their form and texture vary constantly, one moment a bank of grey so bleak and uniform that the sky seems monochrome, the next appearing wholly separate and solid as if islands, capable of supporting cities and nations. Children call it 'cloudbusting', and lie in the grass looking up on summer afternoons, their imaginations painting castles and dragons high in the air. A giant cumulonimbus, heralding a storm to come, like a mountain range in the sky. The delicate traceries of cirrus clouds gently drifting high above as if winged.

For hundreds of years - even after mankind pierced the atmosphere to begin to explore the space beyond - our art and literature has sketched our vivid dreams of a whole world above. Gods and monsters, giants and flying beasts, angels and aliens, prayers and poetry…
